BACKGROUND
The Singapore government is changing all the traditional analogue televisions to digital ones by the end of 2018. NUS contacted me to help them conceptualised quick and easy methods to ease this process for the seniors of Singapore.
PROCESS
Inspired by my own grandpa and after several rounds of ground research with senior citizens around the neighbourhood, I created quick prototypes of remote control guide frame that fixes onto the new digital TV remote control. They were made out of acrylic sheets laser-cut to precision.
The frame shows seniors how to use their new remote control in simple and intuitive ways, guided by coloured stickers and a vibrant instruction sheet for mandarin users.
FRAIM was a success, and distributed around the Jalan Kukoh estate by student volunteers from NUS. The Jalan Kukoh estate has the largest elderly population in Singapore with some 4000 seniors living in rental units there.
REFLECTION
Thinking about it, in just a few mere decades, technology has totally transformed the way we live, eat and communicate. In countries like my own, there exists a huge technology gap, leaving many seniors/disabled/less educated grappling with these tech tools. My grandma gets confused by my touchscreen iPhone all the time! My hope is that everyone can enjoy the everyday moments that tech make possible, making tech feel like just a walk in the park, leaving no one behind.
